The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
