Whenever a prominent honors show nears, one notices an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
