Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
