The defendant pleaded guilty to 17 charges at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

A person who laced candy with tranquilliser and provided them to minors at a youth camp in the area has admitted sexual offences against two children who were nine and 10.

The defendant was detained after eight children and an older person experienced illness at the location in July.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was kept in jail before a further hearing on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, prosecuting, described Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were attending a summer camp which he operated.

The man conducted a "treat game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had played this game with the boys "for many years", and youngsters had previously become sick the following morning.

She explained the man had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the minors being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "This year his family member had concerns about what was going on, for good reason.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC said items including lubricant, ointment and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the police about his worries.

She said Ruben proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not arrived by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the events.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the family member contacted the authorities again.

She explained Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
