Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
